Elaine Folk Marshall is an accomplished American attorney and politician, currently serving as the North Carolina Secretary of State, a position she has held since 1997. A trailblazer for women in politics, she is the first woman to be elected to statewide office in North Carolina. A member of the Democratic Party, Marshall was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2010, although she was not elected, losing to Republican Richard Burr. In 2024, she secured her eighth term as Secretary of State with 51 percent of the vote. Previously, she served as a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1992 to 1996. Marshall holds a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics from the University of Maryland and a Juris Doctor from Campbell University. Her career includes roles as a state senator, legal educator, and partner in legal practices, showcasing her dedication to public service and law.
