The Issue

Growing up in a small town in southwest Oklahoma, I have never seen seatbelts on our school buses. Recently, a tragic accident in a neighboring town profoundly affected me and my community. A school bus crash ejected six people, including three softball players and three coaches. All of them are now in critical condition. This isn't the first time a school bus accident has occurred, and it likely won't be the last. It's high time we take the necessary steps to protect our students as they travel to and from school.

School buses are considered relatively safe, yet the absence of seatbelts is a glaring omission that endangers our children. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45% and moderate-to-critical injury by 50% for passenger vehicle occupants. While not every accident is preventable, a simple lap and shoulder belt system could minimize injuries and save lives in case of an incident.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends that all school buses be equipped with seat belts, noting that they are an effective safety measure to prevent injuries and fatalities. The presence of seatbelts on school buses would provide an extra layer of protection, ensuring that our children have a safer journey every day.

It’s time for legislators, school boards, and communities across America to come together and mandate the installation of seatbelts on all school buses. This initiative could be supported with government grants, or allocated funds from transportation budgets to aid school districts in implementing these necessary changes.

In addition to seatbelts, better defenses and safety measures should be taken to fortify our school buses. Improvements such as enhanced structural integrity, better side impact protection, and additional safety training for drivers could greatly improve overall safety.

Protecting our children should be a priority, and making school buses safer is a crucial step in this direction. Let’s urge the authorities to make the changes necessary to ensure that these large, yellow vehicles are as safe as they can be. Please sign this petition to call for mandatory seatbelts and enhanced safety measures on school buses nationwide.
