Mandate Paid Leave for Women During Menstrual Cycle

The Issue

As a woman, I can tell you that menstruating can be a harsh reality of life. I've had menstrual cycles so heavy that I couldn't eat, sleep, and threw up constantly. It got so bad, I passed out several times, dropping my hemoglobin count to dangerous levels. The only remedy offered by my doctors were iron pills for the anemia, but they could do nothing for the gripping cramps that turned me into a twisted, painful knot. Painful to the point where walking to my work was an agonizing task. Every step, a near unbearable throb, the kind only relieved by crouching or holding on to walls or rails for respite.

If menstrual cramps were just pain, it would have been bearable, but it often comes coupled with the not-so-endearing prospect of hurling and the constant anxiety of running out of sanitary pads. Now imagine being subjected to this, every single month you work.

This is a personal cry for help. As much as it emanates from the very core of my own suffering, it also represents the silent plea of millions of women around the globe. This denial of our monthly ordeal is an affront to our equality and our dignity. No woman should be forced to drain herself dry at her workplace while her body is collapsing under its biological realities.

An average woman has about 450 periods in her lifetime, with each lasting 4-5 days mine almost lasted a year. That's approximately 1800-2250 days or roughly 5-7 years of her working life spent in menstrual pain (source: World Health Organization). It's high time we demand for this unaccounted physiological catastrophe to be recognized.

Heavy cramps get so bad it's like you are having a heartattack(source: Medicalnewstoday)

and quote "Yes, heavy menstrual bleeding, also known as menorrhagia, can be life-threatening if it leads to anemia, which can't be treated without medication. Anemia occurs when there aren't enough red blood cells to circulate enough oxygen throughout the body, which can cause fatigue and lightheadedness. Anemia caused by heavy periods can also increase the risk of severe bleeding after childbirth, which is the leading cause of death for mothers worldwide." Another "Heavy periods aren't usually life-threatening, but they can be if you lose too much blood. Bleeding through two or more tampons or pads each hour for two to three hours in a row is a sign that you should see your provider or seek emergency care Link here

By signing this petition, we demand our governments to enact necessary legislation that ensures paid leave for women during their menstrual cycles, giving us the chance to take care of ourselves without the fear of financial repercussions. Remember, a society that respects the function of womanhood is one that truly respects women. Let's make that society a reality. Sign this petition.
