The Issue

Having studied microplastics in school, I've seen firsthand their pervasive presence. They're everywhere - in your tap water, office water, and even so-called 'filtered water.' Under a microscope, these often appear as little threads of clothing. But beyond their unsightly appearance, the repercussions of microplastics are dire. They have been linked to severe health issues including intestinal injuries, cancer, and metabolic disorders.

Seattle, and Washington State at large, prides itself on leading the way in environmental protection and public health. But as we advocate for a healthier world, we must confront the hidden toxins in everyday appliances. Washing machines, a staple in every household, contribute significantly to microplastics contamination. Each cycle can discharge thousands of microscopic fibers into our water systems.

The solution is simple and actionable: mandate that every washing machine sold in Washington State be equipped with a microplastics filter. This straightforward regulation could drastically minimize the release of harmful fibers into the environment. Other regions, including parts of Europe, are already adopting such measures, and it’s high time Washington follows suit.

When manufacturers are required to incorporate these filters, we extend our commitment to environmental sustainability and public health. This change not only protects our waterways but also reduces the potential health risks associated with ingesting microplastics. It’s a proactive step towards ensuring cleaner water and a healthier population.

Join me in calling on Washington State lawmakers to adopt this necessary requirement. By signing this petition, you lend your voice towards a healthier and more sustainable future for Seattle and the entire state. Every signature matters in urging elected officials to prioritize our health and environment. Please sign and share this petition to make a tangible difference.
