Mandate Landlords to Maintain and Repair Rental Properties Regularly
Mandate Landlords to Maintain and Repair Rental Properties Regularly
The Issue
Many residents in our community, including my friends and relatives, are deeply affected by the negligence of landlords when it comes to property maintenance and repairs. Our plight is often made worse when we remember that among us are elderly and disabled persons who are helpless in the face of these deteriorating conditions. As if this was not dire enough, the tall and overgrown grass around our living spaces has led to sightings of snakes, exposing us to further safety risks.
Despite being reported about as far back as 2019, essential repairs haven't been carried out. Mandatory tasks such as trash pick up and removal, as well as grass cutting, are ignored for weeks on end leading to unlivable conditions. It is disheartening that our pleas for better living conditions have fallen on deaf ears.
In addition to the increased health hazard represented by the presence of pests, such appalling conditions also negatively affect the quality of life and the mental health of the inhabitants. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), inadequate housing conditions can cause or contribute to a wide range of physical, mental and social health problems. To improve the overall welfare of the tenants, landlords need to adhere to a set standard when it comes to property maintenance and repairs.
It's time to translate these complaints into action. We urge the relevant authorities to mandate landlords to ensure regular maintenance and necessary repairs of their properties, ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment for all residents. Please sign this petition to help our voices reach those with the capacity to make a change. Thank you.
