We would like to share a concern that is deeply personal to many of us. Many unfortunate incidents have occurred in and around lakes resulting in numerous lives lost or severe injuries. These tragic circumstances have brought us here today, asking for change. We request that all lakes be equipped with video and audio recording devices to ensure any untoward incident, be it accidental or intentional, is captured and recorded.

The lack of appropriate safety measures and surveillance around lakes is alarming. Accidents are all too common, and in many cases, the reasons for these tragedies remain shrouded in mystery due to the absence of a comprehensive monitoring system. As per the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2005-2014, there was an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. In addition, about one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger (CDC, 2021).

Having a monitoring system in place would not only enhance the safety of those using these lakes but could also provide critical evidence in the event of accidents or potential foul play. It’s the least we deserve to safeguard our lives and loved ones.

Today, we stand together to call for an amendment that mandates installation of video and audio monitoring devices around all lakes. By doing so, we can provide an extra layer of protection and perhaps even deter potential wrongdoers. Let us remember, safety should never be compromised.
