Transgender and gender-diverse individuals are often labelled solely based on their sexual identity. Almost regarding them as "other" has severe implications. It has become apparent the gross mistreatment of transgender and gender-diverse individuals in prison systems. Many transgender individuals and LGBTQ+ individuals experience more adversity than the average heterosexual individual. But they also experience increased incidences in which their human rights have been violated. One of these instances is being denied gender-affirming care in detention facilities, jails, and prisons.
