***A little background as to why this is important to me: I previously dated this man, during this time he displayed a lot of disturbing behaviour, especially when intoxicated.  This had ended years prior, he had tried to turn up at my old address previously. However it wasn’t until he found my NEW address out (unsure how only 4 people had my address) knocked on my door and ONLY my door pretending to canvass (not in his area) that the police, for my safety, gave me disclosure and I was gobsmacked at what they have let into the council! Bad seed doesn’t cut it! ***

Imagine waking up every morning with the thought that the very person elected to serve and protect your community might actually pose a threat to your safety. This fear became my reality when an Incident occurred with current councillor, who had been in a position of trust and authority, and is now under investigation for stalking me. Had a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) taken place this man would not be in a position where he is able to call round peoples houses and be in contact with vulnerable people, he wouldn’t have the position at all. I am at the point now where I have contacted Peterborough city council, the police, the national  Party complaints and am doing this as my final duty.

DBS checks are a critical safety measure in the UK, used to filter individuals who might pose a risk when working with vulnerable populations. It is perplexing—and dangerous—that local councillors, who often enter the homes of constituents and engage in personal matters, do not face the same scrutiny.

The absence of a mandatory DBS check leaves a door open for individuals with potentially harmful pasts to occupy these trusted roles. In fact, studies have shown that a considerable percentage of general crimes, including stalking and harassment, could have been prevented with background checks.

The Personal Safety Charity reports that about 2.5% of adults in the UK experience stalking each year, underscoring the importance of vigilance and prevention in every sector. By mandating DBS checks, we are not only protecting individuals but also upholding the integrity of the very institutions designed to serve us.

The solution is clear and achievable: legislative action to require comprehensive DBS checks for all individuals elected as local councillors. This action will ensure that only those fit to serve and safeguard the community enter these positions of trust and responsibility.

Let's hold our local councils accountable and demand the protection we deserve. Implementing mandatory DBS checks will not only safeguard our residents but also reinforce public trust in local governance. It's time that all members of our community feel safe and protected by those we elect.
