Mandate Councils to Install 'Speed Limit Changed' Signs on Modified Roads

The Issue

Speed limit changes on roads are a common occurrence, often necessary for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. However, these changes can be confusing and potentially dangerous if not properly communicated to road users. Currently, there is no legal obligation for councils to install signs indicating a change in speed limit. This lack of information can lead to unintentional speeding or overly cautious driving, both of which increase the risk of accidents.

On or around the 15th of April 2024 the local council changed the speed limit on the A316 Chertsey Road, just outside Twickenham. It was previously a 40mph section of road (Google Street View), it now has a 30mph speed limit, whilst I agree with the change of the limit I don't agree with the way it's done. The council have only removed the 40mph signs from the entrances to the road as well as the repeaters from the lampposts. This means that those who have driven on the road previously are not aware of any change and everyone for the past 10 days have been driving at 40mph still, if this was truly about safety of the road the council would have made every effort to inform drivers of the new 30mph limit.

To prevent such unfortunate incidents and ensure safer roads for everyone, we urge lawmakers to mandate councils across the country to install 'Speed Limit Changed' signs whenever there is a change in road speed limits. This small but significant step will greatly enhance driver awareness and contribute towards safer driving conditions.
