The Issue
Purchasing goods or services from companies should be straightforward and convenient, yet in our current times, it often isn't. I am 74 years old and consider myself computer literate, but even I have faced immense frustration simply trying to find contact details to resolve problems with purchases. Now, imagine the plight of countless more elderly individuals who might not be as adept at navigating the digital world. These individuals often find themselves at a loss, with nowhere to turn when they encounter issues, further exacerbating their isolation and helplessness.
In our fast-paced society, businesses have rapidly shifted towards digital platforms, understandably so, considering the technological advancements. However, this shift has inadvertently created barriers for some of the population, especially the elderly. It's concerning that many companies and retailers operating within the UK do not provide a straightforward way for customers to contact them with concerns—either through a phone number or an email address.
The absence of clear and accessible customer support options is not just a minor inconvenience; it's a significant issue that affects consumer rights. According to a study by Ofcom in 2022, 2.4 million people aged 75 and over had never used the internet. This statistic underscores the need for traditional forms of communication, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their technological prowess, has equitable access to customer service.
I urge the Government to mandate that any company or retailer doing business in the UK must provide, at the very least, a phone number or email address for customer contact. This requirement will ensure transparency, accessibility, and fairness in consumer transactions.
By implementing this regulation, not only would it empower consumers, particularly the elderly, but it would also foster trust and confidence between businesses and their customers. After all, transparency is a cornerstone of successful business relationships.
Stand with me in asking for change that embraces inclusivity and fairness. Let's ensure that every individual, regardless of their age or technological competence, has access to the assistance they need when engaging in consumer activities. Please sign this petition and help make a difference.
