Mandate Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curriculum in All Virginia Schools

Mandate Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curriculum in All Virginia Schools
The Issue
Why Child Sexual Abuse Prevention in Schools Matters
Someone very close to me was sexually abused by their parent. As a child, she didn’t understand that what was happening to her was wrong—her father manipulated her into believing that the abuse was normal. She had no education or awareness that could have helped her recognize the warning signs or given her the language to ask for help. It wasn’t until she reached a breaking point that she finally spoke out. By then, years of trauma had already been inflicted, and her journey to healing was just beginning.
Her story is not unique. The heartbreaking reality is that 93% of child sexual abuse cases involve someone the child knows and trusts—a family member, a close friend, a coach, or a teacher. Children are often groomed and silenced by those in positions of power over them, leaving them vulnerable without the knowledge or tools to protect themselves.
The Need for Prevention Education in Virginia Schools
1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the U.S. experience child sexual abuse before the age of 18.
Only 38% of child victims ever tell anyone about their abuse, and many disclosures happen years later when the damage has already been done.
Education is prevention. When children are taught about body safety, personal boundaries, and what constitutes inappropriate behavior, they are more likely to recognize abuse, report it, and seek help.
We must break the cycle by ensuring that all Virginia schools include age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention education in their curriculum. Every child deserves the right to feel safe, informed, and empowered to protect themselves. This isn’t just about awareness—it’s about giving children a voice before they suffer in silence.
Join Us in Advocating for Change
We are calling for legislation that mandates child sexual abuse prevention education in all public and private Virginia schools. Let’s ensure no child endures the pain of thinking abuse is normal. Together, we can create a future where children are protected, educated, and heard.
