Set up a professional, women's football team representing Manchester United.
The Issue
On the back of a successful World Cup and the increasing profile of women's football, it is high time you revived the women's team which was shamefully scrapped in 2005 on the basis it wasn't commercially viable.
That is a nonsensical notion, running a women's team costs a fraction of a men's senior team and will give young girls in the local area something to aspire to. There are as many of young girls who want to emulate the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney and pull on the prized red shirt as there are boys.
Case in point is your Girl's under 17's team which has lost just three times in three years at the time of writing. Once they come of age to turn professional the club has slammed the door in their faces and these talented young women have to hope another club with a professional women's senior team picks them up.
On what basis is this acceptable for an organisation of your size to conduct itself? You are the biggest and most famous football club in the country, known for innovation and blazing a trail yet your attitude to women's football suggests a deep-rooted, institutional, misogyny.
With the World Cup still a hot topic and our noisy neighbours, Manchester City showing considerable financial backing for their women's team, we need to match them, something which would do wonders for your public image. This would further improve the marketability of Manchester United and capitalise on a large female fanbase,
You have the resources, you have the commercial reach and you have a massive fanbase to bolster the popularity of women's football in England. Manchester United needs to continue its tradition of being the best in all areas and blazing a trial for everyone else to follow.
Set up a senior, professional, women's football team for Manchester United Football Club and stay true to the club's tradition of innovation and excellence.
I encourage you, the public, to get behind this petition and put pressure, on the club, its Chief Executive, Ed Woodward and the club's new kit sponsors, Adidas to apply commercial pressure on the club.
