Create a fairer system of grading MMU students during the Coronavirus global pandemic

The Issue

The outbreak of Coronavirus has undoubtedly affected the lives of every student currently studying at Manchester Metropolitan University. As well as having lectures, seminars and important tutorials come to a halt on the 17th of March students also now do not have access to essential buildings such as the library. This leaves many students without the books/resources they need, a suitable place to work and access to computer facilities. As well as many students' being hindered by the lack of an appropriate work environment, having university suddenly end and with everything going on currently in the world, student's mental health is likely to be affected during this time. It seems impossible to work to our absolute best abilities when the news is constantly streaming in about death counts and virus spread.

This is why I am asking that Manchester Metropolitan University considers a mitigation system similar to the one being used by the University of Exeter which will provide a 'safety net' policy. The Deputy Vice Chancellor wrote:

"Given the exceptional circumstances in which you are sitting these examinations and other assessments, we have decided to introduce a ‘safety net’ policy. This ‘no-detriment’ approach is as follows: so long as you would qualify to progress/graduate based on your marks obtained this year (including those in the summer assessment period), then we will ensure that your final academic year average is the same as, or higher than, the average you have attained up to Sunday 15th March."

This system would ensure that no one's university grade will suffer as a result of Coronavirus, as well as still allowing students to improve on last terms grades.
