Public transportation has been a problem for many years now because there is so much violence on the subways. Recently there have been many reports in the NYC subways, for example in an article it says “ In the train station a lot of violence happens.  like people getting stabbed, Harassed,Sexual assault , People being rude and Dunn Road and disrespecting their fellow New Yorker on the train.

In the past few years there were 2,211 index crimes(including murder, rape, robbery, burglary, assault, and grand larceny in the subway in 2024. There were 10 murders in the subway in 2024 and had gone up from 2023-2024. Overall violent crime (including misdemeanor assaults) in the subway nearly doubled from 1,445 in 2014 to 2,745 in 2024, according to Vital City. While shootings are down overall in the city, they have increased in the subway system compared to 2019. Violent crime recidivism (repeat offenders) in the subways has doubled since 2019.  Robberies were down 16.3%, from 541 in 2023 to 453 in 2024. An example was on 2025 January 7 a 57 year old lady was set on fire for no apparent reason she was going home like anyone else and a man was next to the old lady and he set her on fire causing her to die due to her being set on fire alive.

An encounter I had at the New York City subway station was yesterday May 7th 2025. I got out of the doctor’s office, and I took the A train. It stopped at 125th St. Everyone was looking around confused and asking why the doors were not closing. My mom was sitting next to me. She told me to pay attention and listen to what the people on the microphone were saying. I took out my headphones, and all I heard on the speakers was “Police! Police! Someone is getting stabbed on a train!” It's like time slowed down. People were going in and out of the cars. My heart was racing. I didn’t know who was coming in or out.

We want more police officers in the subway system, but we want them equipped with less lethal weapons like batons, pepper spray, and or tasers. This would be so much better than having cops walking around with guns and them taking out guns on only a person who refuses to leave. We don't want anyone dying over small and meaningless things.
