Make the 1.5-Meter Rule a Law – Protect Cyclists, Save Lives

The issue

Every day, cyclists put their lives at risk simply by sharing the road. Unsafe passing distances and close calls are far too common, and tragically, some encounters end in serious injury or death. It’s time to take action and make our roads safer for everyone.

We call on lawmakers to legislate a mandatory 1.5-meter passing rule for vehicles overtaking cyclists on New Zealand roads. This law would ensure drivers allow at least 1.5 meters of space when passing a cyclist, helping to prevent accidents and promote safer road-sharing practices.

Why This Matters:
🚴‍♂️ Cyclists deserve safe space – A wider passing distance reduces the risk of accidents caused by sudden swerves, potholes, or wind drafts from passing vehicles.
🚗 Clear guidelines for drivers – A legal passing distance removes confusion and ensures consistent, enforceable road safety standards.
⚠️ Prevent accidents before they happen – Giving cyclists adequate space can mean the difference between a close call and a catastrophe.
🌍 Encourage sustainable transport – Safer cycling conditions will lead to more people choosing bikes, reducing traffic congestion and emissions.

What We’re Asking For:
🔹 A law requiring a minimum 1.5-meter passing distance for vehicles overtaking cyclists.
🔹 Increased driver education on safely sharing the road with cyclists.
🔹 Enforcement and penalties to ensure compliance with the rule.

Waiting a few extra seconds to pass safely can save a life. Sign this petition and support a safer, more cycle-friendly future for all road users! 🚴🚗💙
