For years, gun owners in New York State, like myself, have been deprived of the ability to use suppressors on our bolt action rifles, resulting in significant harm to our health. The absence of these devices means that every time we fire, whether in the wilderness or at a shooting range, our hearing suffers.
The loudness of a rifle shot is not just an inconvenience; it is a legitimate health concern that leads to long-term hearing damage.
I have personally experienced the detrimental effects of unprotected exposure to gunfire. The sound of rifles discharging is not only deafening but also dangerous to our auditory health.
It's shocking that, in 2025, New York State still maintains an outdated ban on suppressors for bolt action rifles.
Suppressors are misunderstood by many. They do not silence a firearm as often portrayed in movies; instead, they reduce the noise to a safer, decibel level, minimizing the risk of permanent hearing loss.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court has established that laws without historical backing should be overturned. Thus, maintaining the current limitation on suppressors without valid historical precedent is unconstitutional. If we were to challenge this law, we are sure that a complete lift of the ban will be granted for not only rifles, but for All guns.
The use of suppressors on bolt-action rifles is a reasonable, responsible, and scientifically supported measure to protect the hearing of lawful gun owners. Across the country, many states have already recognized both the safety and practicality of suppressors, disproving the misconceptions and unfounded fears surrounding their use.
Legalizing suppressors is a matter of prioritizing health, safety, and evidence-based policy over outdated assumptions. It is also important to highlight that statistically, less than 1% (0.9%) of legal gun owners ever commit a crime with a firearm. This demonstrates that lawful gun owners are being burdened and restricted due to the actions of individuals who obtain and use firearms illegally. Criminals—by definition—do not follow gun laws, and there is no realistic way to prevent them from acquiring weapons or accessories through illegal channels.
Maintaining a ban on suppressors does nothing to deter those with criminal intent. Instead, it continues to penalize responsible, law-abiding citizens who seek only to use suppressors for legitimate safety and health-related reasons.
It’s time to align policy with reality: suppressor legalization enhances safety without increasing risk. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has the opportunity to lead on this issue by aligning state law with a contemporary understanding of suppressors.
We respectfully urge Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature to reconsider and repeal the ban on bolt action suppressors. This is not just a plea, but a necessity for health, rights, and reason.
Please show your support by signing this petition. Together, we can make a critical change for all gun owners in New York State who respect the law and prioritize their hearing and health safety. Let's join hands to advocate for a sensible and rightful amendment to the existing legal framework regarding suppressors.
