Every year as warm weather graces Port Moody, residents of all ages eagerly anticipate the opening of the Westhill Pool—a beloved community recreation spot. However, a staple of our long, sunny days doesn't open until June, limiting our enjoyment of the warm spring weather. Despite good weather consistently starting in May for over a month, we miss opportunities to swim, relax, and engage with our community.

Westhill Pool provides immeasurable value to our community. It’s not just a place to cool off; it’s a vital social hub where children learn to swim, families bond, friends gather, and community spirit thrives. It symbolizes outdoor fun and an active lifestyle that Port Moody values.

By opening the pool in May, the city can align with community needs and enhance residents’ quality of life. We ask Port Moody’s city officials to consider this straightforward change. It involves adjusting current opening schedules, allocating necessary resources, and managing staff availability to ensure community access. With effective planning, an earlier opening supports economic growth by increasing local foot traffic and encouraging visitors.

The city has an opportunity to better serve its residents and align with similar urban centres that have already recognized and adapted to longer warm periods. Our weather patterns have shifted, and it’s time for our policies to reflect these changes.
