Make our community safe for our children on Lawrence Way! Slow idiots down.
The issue
Two weeks ago, a moment no parent should ever experience nearly shattered our family's life. Our five-year-old daughter was hit and almost killed by a speeding, distracted driver as she crossed from the community park to Beenyup Primary School. This horrifying incident was a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures on Lawrence Way.
Unfortunately 3 days after my little girl was hit there was another child hit by another car. Two too many !!
Lawrence Way, is a adjacent to both a bustling community park and Beenyup Primary School, is meant to be a safe passage for our children, whether they are heading to school or playing at the park. However, it has become a danger zone due to the reckless driving and lack of sufficient safety regulations. This is not just our family’s story; it is an imminent risk faced by all families in the community.
Statistics from the National Road Safety Partnership indicate that school zones without adequate infrastructure are three times more likely to experience traffic-related accidents. Moreover, research shows that reducing speed limits and enhancing pedestrian crossing areas can cut the likelihood of accidents by nearly 40%.
We urgently call on the local authorities of Byford in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to take action. Steps such as installing a zerba crossing incorporating speed bumps, increasing signage, and enforcing stricter penalties for speeding can ensure that every child and pedestrian is safe on Lawrence Way.
Let’s not wait for another close call or a tragedy to occur. We can make Lawrence Way a model of safety, where children and their families feel protected as they move between school and home.
Please join me in demanding change, Let’s act now to prioritize the safety of our children and our community. Sign this petition to urge the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale council to implement these necessary measures immediately.
