Make Our Communities Safer: Tougher Penalties for Vehicle Theft, Arson, and Aggravated Break and Enter
Recent events have made it clear that current laws are not doing enough to protect everyday people from serious property crime.
Last week, my family experienced this firsthand. Our vehicle was targeted and ultimately set on fire. What started as criminal intent-whether theft or attempted theft-ended in deliberate destruction. We were left standing there, watching it burn, completely powerless to stop it.
That moment wasn’t just about losing a car. It was about the fear, the shock, and the realization that someone could cause that level of damage with so little immediate consequence. Fires like this don’t just destroy property-they put lives, homes, and entire neighborhoods at risk.
Incidents like this are happening far too often. Offenders are not only stealing vehicles, but when they fail, they are destroying them-often by burning them. This is dangerous, reckless, and should be treated as a serious criminal offense.
We are calling for urgent law reform, including:
- Stronger penalties for vehicle theft, especially for repeat offenders.
- Harsher consequences for attempted theft that results in property destruction.
- Clear classification of vehicle burning as a serious and aggravated offense due to the risk to life and surrounding property.
- Tougher sentencing for aggravated break and enter, particularly when combined with theft or malicious damage.
- Greater accountability for repeat offenders through stricter bail and sentencing measures.
We also want acknowledgment of the impact on victims-the fear, the financial strain, and the helplessness of being unable to protect what is yours in the moment it’s being destroyed.
No family should have to stand by and watch their property burn, feeling completely powerless.
It’s time for laws that reflect the seriousness of these crimes and act as a real deterrent.
Sign this petition to call for stronger laws, safer communities, and real consequences for those who put others at risk.
