Make OT reports priority for disabled people in homeless council care

Make OT reports priority for disabled people in homeless council care
The Issue
Last summer, I experienced the harsh reality of homelessness under the council's care. Despite providing clear medical evidence of my disability and requesting an Occupational Therapy assessment, I was placed in two temporary accommodations that were physically unsuitable. My concerns were consistently ignored due to the non-visible nature of my disability. The property I had to accept is equally unsuitable for my needs and I am still waiting on an OT assessment 6 months on.
This lack of consideration not only exacerbates my situation but highlights a critical gap in the system for others facing similar challenges. The council's failure to accommodate those with disabilities appropriately forces many individuals, like myself, to endure living conditions that are neither suitable nor sustainable.
An OT report should be a fundamental part of the accommodation evaluation process for disabled individuals at risk of homelessness. It is essential to ensure that the living environment meets the physical needs of the individual, thus preventing additional physical and mental challenges.
Statistics show that 19% of people experiencing homelessness in the UK have some form of disability, yet adequate assessments are seldom prioritised. Enforcing mandatory OT reports when determining suitable housing can significantly improve quality of life and provide a pathway to stability for vulnerable individuals.
I urge the council to revise its protocols and mandate OT reports in their housing assessment process. This change is not only a matter of policy but a critical step towards ensuring dignity and respect for all individuals facing homelessness, irrespective of whether their disabilities are visible.
