Every year, as an Aboriginal man and founder of a sovereign-governed Indigenous business platform, I witness the immense energy our communities pour into NAIDOC Week celebrations. It’s a unique week where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements are celebrated across Australia. However, it pains me to see that most of the country cannot properly attend these events due to their work commitments.

NAIDOC Week, which stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, has origins dating back to the 1920s. It has since evolved into a week dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Despite its significance, many Australians find it challenging to participate in NAIDOC Week activities due to their normal weekday obligations.

By making NAIDOC a public holiday, we can ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate in and learn from these vital celebrations. It would be a moment for all Australians to engage deeply with our Indigenous cultures and histories, fostering greater understanding and unity across our nation.

According to the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), engaging with Indigenous communities through events like NAIDOC could significantly enhance cultural competence and reduce racial biases. Thus, a public holiday would not only amplify the celebrations but also contribute to a more informed and harmonious society.
