Make literature and fasihi compulsory in senior school

The Issue

Growing up in Kenya, I developed a deep-seated love for literature and fasihi. These subjects opened up worlds for me, expanding my understanding of different cultures, histories, and human experiences. They have significantly contributed to my personal growth and shaped my passion for governance. However, I am deeply concerned that these essential subjects are not currently mandatory in senior schools across Kenya.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has the power to change this, ensuring that every student in senior school has the opportunity to learn these critical subjects. Literature in English and Fasihi in Kiswahili provide a unique and valuable perspective that is crucial in a well-rounded education. They teach students critical thinking, empathy, and cultural awareness—skills that are indispensable in today’s interconnected world.

In countries with education systems that prioritize literature, students are often more culturally aware and possess better communication skills. These skills are essential for governance and leadership, areas in which Kenya must continue to evolve to achieve its national development goals and Vision 2030.

By making literature and fasihi compulsory, we equip our future leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to engage with the world effectively. It is not just about learning to appreciate great works of art, but about understanding social dynamics, ethical questions, and the human condition. These subjects encourage students to think critically beyond the classroom, fostering a generation of thoughtful, informed citizens.

Moreover, studies have shown that students who engage with literature tend to excel in other areas of their education as well, suggesting a correlation between wide-ranging literacy skills and academic success. By incorporating literature and fasihi more fundamentally into our curriculum, we provide students with a competitive edge on the global stage.

I urge the KICD to recognize the vital role that literature and fasihi play in shaping not just individual futures, but the future of our nation. Please sign this petition to make literature and fasihi compulsory in senior school, ensuring that all students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for the diverse challenges of tomorrow's world.
