The Issue

I've watched our precious rivers and seas suffer from alarming levels of pollution, caused by untreated sewage and waste being recklessly dumped into them. Growing up near these waters, they were my playground, the source of so many joyful memories swimming, playing, and exploring. But with every passing year, the pollution has become more pronounced. Witnessing the decline of these once-pristine environments is not just heartbreaking—it's a call to action for every single one of us.

For too long, water companies and other industries have been allowed to dispose of both toxic and non-toxic waste directly into our rivers, watercourses, and even the sea. This rampant pollution threatens our already vulnerable ecosystems and endangers the wildlife that depends on these waters for their livelihoods. Furthermore, free swimmers, families enjoying seaside outings, and water sports enthusiasts face considerable health risks from polluted waters and beaches. The safety and well-being of our communities, as well as that of our precious wildlife, hang in the balance.

In the UK alone, there have been numerous reports and instances of illegal sewage discharge. Although regulations exist, enforcement is weak and penalties are lax. According to the Environmental Audit Committee, there were more than 400,000 sewage spills in 2020, highlighting the dire need for reform. These figures are unacceptable and underscore the urgent need for legislative changes to protect our waterways.

We urgently call upon the government to revise and strengthen current legislation to make it illegal for companies to release untreated sewage and any form of waste into our waters. We propose stricter penalties for violations, improved enforcement mechanisms, and investment in modern waste treatment technologies to ensure compliance. By tightening the legal framework and holding businesses accountable, we can protect our natural environments for future generations.

Our rivers, lakes, and coastlines are more than just bodies of water—they are vital ecosystems that deserve our respect and protection. The stakes are too high to ignore any longer. By taking action now, we can preserve the beauty and safety of our waterways for ourselves and generations to come.

Your voice can drive this change. Let's rally together to demand a cleaner, safer environment. Please sign this petition insisting the government act decisively against the pollution of our waterways.
