Make Housing Fair in Our Community
Make Housing Fair in Our Community
The Issue
In Los Altos, California, housing has become way too expensive, and it is causing a big problem in the community. People who work hard every day, like teachers, firefighters, police officers, nurses, and older residents who have lived here for many years, are being pushed out because they can no longer afford to live in town. Many of them are being forced to move far away to find a home they can afford, which means they have to wake up early, sit in traffic for a long time, and spend hours commuting every single day. Some of my teachers have to drive really far just to get to school and then drive the same distance home, which must be exhausting. It also takes time away from their families and makes them more tired during the day. When people like this cannot afford to live where they work, it breaks the connection between them and the community. It is not fair that people who help us and take care of us are not able to live in the town they work in. This also causes more traffic, more pollution, and makes Los Altos feel less like a true community and more like a place only for people with a lot of money.
If this problem keeps growing, Los Altos will become a town where only rich people can live, and that would change everything. The town will lose the people who make it strong and special. It will become harder for families to stay together, and kids might have to keep changing schools if they have to move again and again. When people have to leave because of high housing prices, it breaks apart friend groups, school communities, and neighborhoods. Some people who grew up in Los Altos will not be able to stay here as adults because they cannot afford it anymore. That is not fair either. A good town should be made up of all kinds of people with different jobs and backgrounds. When only a few types of people can afford to stay, the town becomes less friendly and less welcoming. The more people get pushed out, the more Los Altos will lose the people who care about it and help make it better. These are the people who teach kids, help during emergencies, and support local businesses. If they are all forced to leave, the whole community will suffer. The town will not feel like a real home to everyone anymore.
This petition asks the city of Los Altos to support building more homes that regular people can afford. These do not need to be big or fancy houses. They just need to be safe and clean places where families can live without spending all their money on rent or a mortgage. The city should help make it easier for people and groups to build homes that cost less. If more affordable homes are built, then people who work here can live here too. It will make traffic better, keep families close, and help kids stay in their schools. It will make Los Altos stronger and more fair. Everyone should have a chance to live in the town they work in or grew up in. Helping with affordable housing means helping real people, not just with money but with their lives. Thank you for reading this petition and thinking about how important this is for our town.
