The issue

Growing up near the coast, seafood has always been a staple in my diet. As a frequent fish eater, I want to be able to know my food is ethically sourced. Yet, when I go to the store, I often find myself frustrated by the vague and sometimes misleading labels that are supposed to inform me about the origin and methods used in catching the fish I want to purchase.

We live in an era where consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental and ethical impacts of their purchases. However, the lack of transparency in fish labeling makes it unnecessarily hard for people like me, who are striving to make conscientious decisions. All safety labels for fish should clearly detail the methods used for catching, the environmental impact of these methods, and any certifications regarding ethical sourcing.

This change isn't just about better information; it's about empowering consumers to support sustainable practices. According to the United Nations, one-third of the world's fish stocks are overfished, and approximately 93 million tons of fish are caught every year. Transparent labeling could help drive demand for sustainably sourced fish, discouraging practices that contribute to overfishing and habitat destruction.

Moreover, current labels aren’t consistently easy to access. Information should be available not just in physical stores but also online for those who shop digitally. QR codes that link to detailed sourcing information, visible placement on packaging, and online databases are some solutions that could make a significant difference.

We urge lawmakers and the fishing industry to collaborate on enforcing stricter labeling regulations. Labeling transparency should not be an industry secret—it's a right owed to consumers who care about the planet and ethical sourcing.

Join me in calling for comprehensive fish labeling that ensures consumers have all the necessary information to make ethical and informed choices. Sign this petition and support the move toward transparency and accountability in the seafood industry.
