I am deeply concerned about the current legal landscape surrounding false allegations in cases of domestic violence in Queensland. After engaging in discussions with Child Safety and the Queensland Police Service (QPS), it has come to my attention that while domestic violence (DV) rates are alarmingly high, there is also a significant number of false allegations being made. Unfortunately, under current legislation, making a false allegation is not classified as a criminal offense, which poses significant challenges in ensuring justice for the wrongfully accused.

False allegations can ruin lives and a the leading cause of males being withheld from their children during Family Court Matters. They can lead to unjust legal consequences, irreparable damage to reputations, and severe emotional distress for individuals who are falsely accused. Moreover, these allegations waste valuable resources of law enforcement agencies, dilute the focus on real victims, and ultimately undermine the credibility of actual survivors seeking justice.

In 2022 alone, statistics from the QPS indicated that false allegations in domestic violence cases led to numerous cases being dismissed, leaving the system clogged and victims unsupported. This not only affects those falsely accused but also jeopardizes the safety and well-being of genuine victims. Considering the gravity of this issue, it becomes imperative to address it promptly and effectively.

I urge the Queensland government to take decisive action by criminalizing false allegations in cases of domestic violence. This will act as a deterrent against those who misuse the legal system, ensuring that justice is delivered fairly and efficiently. Moreover, by implementing strict penalties for false allegations, we can help maintain the integrity of the justice system and protect those who genuinely need assistance.
