Make English an Official Language of New Zealand.

Make English an Official Language of New Zealand.
The issue
As someone who, like most people in New Zealand, speaks English, the lack of official status for the English language is frustrating and confusing. While New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and Te Reo Māori hold significant cultural and historical value, the reality remains that English is the most commonly spoken language within our diverse nation since the 1860s.
At present, New Zealand recognizes NZSL and Te Reo Māori as its official languages. While this inclusivity is admirable, the emphasis on only these languages not used by the majority is not inclusive. According to the 2018 Census of Population and Dwellings, over 96% of the population is proficient in English, while only 4% speak Te Reo fluently, and 0.5% speak NZSL. This indicates that English is not only the common form of communication but an integral part of New Zealand society and identity.
Granting official status to English doesn't mean overlooking the importance of NZSL and Te Reo Māori. Instead, it's about embracing New Zealand's multifaceted identity, where all languages coexist and are equally respected. This change can pave the way for a more inclusive society, where everyone, regardless of linguistic background, feels recognized and included.
Also, prior to the last election the coalition government promised to make English an official language of New Zealand. However, they have not had this acted on yet.
All operations in NZ are conducted in English, from workplaces, to parliament. This shows that English deserves to be an official language, as New Zealand uses it predominantly through everything.
Let's make a move towards an inclusive representation of our diverse nation by getting English recognized as an official language of New Zealand. Support this petition to drive change for a more inclusive future!
