Make Diwali a holiday for all schools in CVUSD

Make Diwali a holiday for all schools in CVUSD
The Issue
Growing up, Diwali was a festival that brought my family together in vibrant celebration. It is a time of joy, lights, and community, a time to remember our roots and cherish the bonds we hold dear. Yet, each year, I find my participation in this cherished festival waning due to the demands of school in the Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD). Missing school leads to missed assignments, tests, and valuable class time, forcing many students to compromise their cultural and religious practices.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions globally and has profound significance for many students and families within the CVUSD community. Recognizing this cultural diversity enriches the academic environment and fosters inclusion and understanding among students of different backgrounds.
Currently, significant holidays for various religions, like Christmas and Yom Kippur, are acknowledged with a day off. We urge CVUSD to extend the same respect and inclusion to Diwali, by making it a school holiday for all students. This move would not only show respect for the South Asian and Indian American communities but also promote inclusivity and multicultural awareness.
Statistics show that Indian Americans form a substantial part of the American population, contributing immensely to society's cultural and economic fabric. In California alone, there are over 700,000 Indian Americans, many of whom call the greater Conejo Valley area home. Recognizing Diwali as a school holiday would reflect this demographic reality and acknowledge their contribution to our community.
We understand that academic schedules are complex, but solutions exist. CVUSD could adopt a flexible holiday schedule that accommodates diverse cultural celebrations, allowing students a choice in the holidays they observe without penalties. Other school districts across the United States have implemented similar programs with success.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more inclusive academic calendar that respects the rich tapestry of cultures represented in our schools. Let us all stand together to make Diwali a holiday in CVUSD, enrich our students' educational experiences, and honor the diverse cultural identities within our community.
