The issue

In one heartbreaking week, three female hospitality workers in Darwin were brutally attacked while simply doing their jobs. These women were not just employees; they are mothers, sisters, friends and daughters who deserve a safe working environment. Their stories paint a vivid picture of the urgent crisis facing our city's vibrant nightlife scene.

Darwin’s nightlife is one of its most cherished aspects, drawing locals and tourists alike to enjoy an evening out, unwind, and celebrate in the spirit of community. Yet, persistently, these experiences are tarnished by repeat offenders engaging in antisocial behaviour and violence, wreaking havoc for venue staff and patrons. The problem is cyclical; the same offenders continually return, seemingly unaccountable and undefeated by current deterrents.

The toll this takes on our community is profound. Not only are livelihoods threatened, but safety is compromised, and trust is shattered. Venue staff frequently confront violent outbreaks, security personnel are stretched thin, and patrons live with a shadow of fear looming over what should be carefree nights out.

In contrast, Western Australia has taken significant steps to address similar issues. Through amendments to the Liquor Control Act 1988, law enforcement there is empowered to ban individuals who habitually cause disruptions from accessing nightlife venues and the entertainment precinct.

It’s time for Darwin to take a page from Western Australia’s book and enact similar measures. We propose the introduction of legislation that grants law enforcement agencies the authority to impose bans on offenders, effectively curbing their ability to trample on the rights and safety of others.

We are calling on the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly to introduce legislation that allows:

  • Police to issue immediate banning notices for anti-social or violent behaviour
  • Offenders to be excluded from key nightlife areas (like Mitchell Street)
  • Repeat violent offenders to face extended bans (and life bans from entertainment venues)
  • Clear enforcement powers for Northern Territory Police Force

A safer Darwin nightlife is within our grasp, but to seize it, we need decisive action from our local government to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of its citizens and workers.

We call on the Northern Territory Government to introduce these needed amendments and protect our community.

Please add your voice by signing this petition and help create a safer and more enjoyable nightlife for everyone in Darwin. Our community deserves nothing less.

Thank you so much for your support!
