Make CPR and seizure training mandatory in NSW schools

Make CPR and seizure training mandatory in NSW schools
The issue
When my sister suffered seizures, I was overwhelmed with fear and helplessness. I realised then how unprepared I was to handle these emergencies. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many people who find themselves as bystanders in such critical situations without the necessary knowledge to act effectively. This is why I am urging the New South Wales Government to make CPR and seizure training mandatory in all schools across the region.
In Australia, approximately 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest each year, and without immediate assistance, their chance of survival decreases significantly. Moreover, seizure disorders affect about 3-4% of the population at some point in their lives. Learning CPR and seizure first aid in school can make the difference between life and death. Equipping students with these essential skills from a young age can empower them to act decisively and save lives.
Implementing this program in schools can be accomplished through partnerships with organizations like St John Ambulance and Epilepsy Action Australia. These organizations already provide training modules which schools can integrate into their curricula. Additionally, professional development for teachers can further support the sustainability and effectiveness of such initiatives. By institutionalizing this training, we create a culture of preparedness and responsibility among young Australians.
Providing this education in New South Wales schools would not only enhance students' personal development but also foster a more resilient and caring community. It facilitates a proactive approach to potential health crises and normalizes emergency response training as a standard part of learning.
Let's work together to ensure our educators and students are prepared to handle emergencies confidently and competently. Please sign this petition to make CPR and seizure training a mandatory part of the curriculum in all NSW schools. Together, we can make a lifesaving difference.
