Make comprehensive sex education mandatory in 12th grade

Make comprehensive sex education mandatory in 12th grade
The Issue
Growing up, I never had the opportunity to receive comprehensive sexual education besides a single hour-long session centered exclusively on pregnancy. As I prepare to enter university, I've realized how little I know about the critical aspects of sexual health, particularly from the perspective of a queer person. This lack of knowledge puts me at a disadvantage and potentially at risk, a reality that is all too common among my peers and poses a broader concern for public health.
Sex education is a vital component of empowering young people with the knowledge necessary to make safe and informed decisions. Every 12th-grade student deserves access to a general, multi-class course covering all dimensions of sexual health. This curriculum should include comprehensive information about STDs, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), healthy relationships, consent, contraception, and sexual orientation.
Facts speak louder than opinions. According to the Guttmacher Institute, comprehensive sex education reduces the risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections while helping teenagers make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that sex education programs that cover a broad range of topics, including LGBTQ+ issues, can significantly reduce discrimination and bullying in schools.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that students who receive comprehensive sex education feel more secure in navigating their sexual health and are more likely to delay sexual activity until they are fully ready. By equipping students with accurate, judgement-free information, we can foster a generation that is both informed and empathetic.
To achieve this, we must urge educational policy-makers to standardize and mandate a comprehensive sex education curriculum for all 12th graders, ensuring it is inclusive and meets the diverse needs of every student. We must advocate for multiple classes throughout the year dedicated to sexual health education, transcending the limited, single-class approach currently in place.
It is time to prioritize the sexual health education of high school students, empowering them as they transition into adulthood. Start making a change for future generations by adding your signature to this petition. Together, we can create an educational environment where every student has the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive.
