Make climate change a higher priority in Australian government
The issue
Climate change is an existential threat affecting our planet's future. Recent research has highlighted concerning impacts on Australia, which is especially vulnerable to climate-related challenges. Rising temperatures, bushfires, droughts, and extreme weather events have shown that time is running out, and these challenges are only escalating.
In Australia, we are witnessing unprecedented environmental damage with severe economic and social consequences. The 2019-2020 bushfire season, known as Black Summer, scorched over 18 million hectares of land, destroyed over 5,900 buildings, including 2,779 homes, and tragically resulted in the death of 34 people. According to the Insurance Council of Australia, claims from this disaster amounted to more than $2.4 billion.
Despite these stark realities, climate change does not receive the attention it demands from our national government. It’s crucial that comprehensive policies be implemented to mitigate climate impacts. These should include transitioning to renewable energy, investing in sustainable infrastructure, and encouraging carbon emission reductions across industries. Immediate engagement with global climate agreements to set binding targets will ensure Australia does its part in the global fight against climate change.
We urge the Australian government to act decisively and prioritize climate change policies to protect our environment, economy, and future generations from potentially irreversible damage. Understanding the gravity of the situation and acting now will not only save our unique biodiversity but will also set a global example of commitment to sustainable practices and innovative environmental stewardship.
Sign this petition to demand that the Australian government places climate change at the center of their policy agenda and takes bold steps towards creating a sustainable future. Our country’s future and the planet depend on it.
