Make Cameras Mandatory in All Mississippi Daycare Centers
The Issue
Every parent in Mississippi deserves peace of mind when they drop their child off at daycare. Unfortunately, too many parents face the nightmare of picking up an injured child only to receive zero explanation, changing stories, or a simple "we don’t know what happened" from staff. This is unacceptable. Our children cannot always speak for themselves, and parents have a right to know the truth.
We are petitioning Mississippi lawmakers to pass legislation making high-definition security cameras mandatory in all licensed childcare facilities. Cameras create an environment of accountability. When staff members know they are being recorded, the likelihood of physical abuse or neglect drops drastically. Furthermore, when accidental injuries do happen, footage provides clear, indisputable facts—protecting both the children and the childcare workers from false accusations. We demand that Mississippi law require daycares to install cameras in the following areas: All Classrooms & Playrooms: Continuous monitoring of daily care and peer interactions. Nap & Sleeping Areas: Ensuring supervision during vulnerable downtime. Eating Areas & Cafeterias: To monitor choking hazards and mealtime incidents. Indoor & Outdoor Playgrounds: Where physical falls, rough play, and injuries are most common. Hallways & Entryways: To track building security and exact drop-off/pick-up times. Note: To fully respect child privacy and state laws, restrooms and diaper-changing stations will be strictly excluded from camera placement. Additionally, this law must require: Zero Blind Spots: Strategic camera placement to ensure no hidden corners. 30-Day Minimum Footage Retention: Daycares must securely save all video files for at least 30 days, giving parents and state investigators time to request and review footage following an incident. No more excuses. No more changing stories. Just clear visual facts. Let’s protect Mississippi’s children and give parents the transparency they deserve.
