The Issue

Big tech data centers are making our electricity bills skyrocket and we’re the ones paying for it. Everyday people are stuck covering the cost of grid upgrades and higher energy prices, while tech giants use massive amounts of power for free.

And it’s not just your wallet that’s suffering: these data centers use huge amounts of water for cooling, contributing to local water shortages and worsening drought conditions. This is unfair, unsustainable, and it has to stop.

We demand that our lawmakers and utility regulators make tech companies pay their fair share — not households.

What we want:

  1. Stop cost-shifting: Utilities can’t dump data center costs onto families.
  2. Fair fees for big users: Data centers must pay rates that match their huge electricity use.
  3. Transparency: We need clear reporting on energy use, costs, and who’s paying.
  4. Clean & efficient energy: Companies should use energy-saving technology, renewables, and clean backup power.

Why this matters:

U.S. data centers used ~176 TWh (Ter watt per hour) of electricity in 2023 — about 4.4% of all U.S. power.

By 2030, data centers could use 8–12% of U.S. electricity.
Some areas have seen wholesale electricity costs rise 267% in 5 years near data centers, and we foot the bill.

Large data centers can use as much power as 100,000 households.
AI and cloud computing are driving electricity demand even higher, pushing our bills up more.
