The Issue

As a pet owner, I am deeply saddened to know that many animals, like my two beloved cats, are at risk of being euthanized simply because they have not been adopted. Every animal deserves a chance at life, and it pains me to think of those who don’t get that opportunity. In Philadelphia, countless dogs and cats face this grim reality every day, as they wait in overcrowded shelters.

The statistics are troubling. It is estimated that about 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year in the United States, including approximately 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). In Philadelphia alone, hundreds of animals meet this fate annually due to space and resource constraints. This is not just a number; behind each figure is a life full of potential love and companionship.

Philadelphia has the power to be a leading city in animal welfare by transforming all its animal shelters into no-kill facilities. This would mean that healthy or treatable animals would not be euthanized, ensuring that they have the opportunity to find loving homes, regardless of how long it takes. There are successful models of no-kill communities across the nation, such as Austin, Texas, which boasts a save rate of over 90% for both dogs and cats. Philadelphia can learn from these successes and implement similar programs and strategies.

Steps to achieve this include increasing community awareness about adoption opportunities, fostering programs, and volunteering at local shelters. Additionally, greater collaboration with rescue groups and fostering agencies could significantly reduce euthanasia rates. Initiatives to increase funding for shelters from both public and private sources would also be crucial in supporting this transition.

Together, we can make a change. By implementing a no-kill policy, Philadelphia would protect countless animal lives and set a compassionate example for others to follow. I urge you to join me in advocating for this important cause. Please sign this petition to help make Philadelphia’s animal shelters no-kill, allowing every animal a chance to live and be loved.
