Many people with type 2 diabetes in Delaware are struggling to gain access to affordable GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of drugs that improves blood glucose control, reduces body weight, and lowers the risk of cardiovascular and renal complications. The high cost of these medications has put them out of reach for many individuals.

A recent study determined that only 14% of all diabetes patients are on GLP-1 drugs, chiefly because they can't afford them. Delaware, with a population where 10.2% of adults have diabetes higher than the national average (based on 2021 Delaware Department of Health data), is experiencing adverse effects due to this. A large number of these patients should be on GLP-1, but they can't afford it.

This lack of affordable access is exacerbating health disparities and creating unnecessary suffering. It's time to change this. We urgently request that the Delaware health authorities and legislators ensure that these life-saving medications are made affordable and accessible to all who need them.
