Sarah Elizabeth McBride, born in 1990, is an American human rights activist and politician. She is the U.S. representative-elect for Delaware's at-large congressional district and a member of the Democratic Party. McBride has served in the Delaware Senate since January 2021, representing the 1st Senate district. She made history as the first openly transgender state senator in the United States, becoming the highest-ranking openly transgender elected official in the country. Before her tenure in the Senate, McBride worked as the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign from 2016 to 2021. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Government from American University and attended the Cab Calloway School of the Arts. McBride also teaches Public Policy at the University of Delaware.
