Infrastructure plan for Sussex Co. Delaware

Infrastructure plan for Sussex Co. Delaware

The Issue

Over the last years, the Sussex County Council has approved hundreds of housing developments bordering on marsh lands and major thoroughfares. Unfortunately, there were few infrastructure plans included in these proposals and the proliferation of subdivisions have had a significant negative impact on the flora and fauna of the area and quality of life for residents and visitors. Our major roads are jammed with traffic. Consequently, local travel times have tripled, traffic and pedestrian accidents have risen exponentially and frustrated drivers disregard traffic signals in order to bypass the gridlock.  This unbridled development has displaced wildlife, destroyed natural habitats and threatened an already fragile ecosystem.

As a long time Sussex County resident, I have seen and unfortunately experienced the results of the building boom. To date, nothing and no one seems capable of curtailing this out of control development. The lack of planning defies common sense. Rehoboth Beach, declared the "nations summer capital" will soon become "the nations summer nightmare".

I and the undersigned are calling upon you to:

  • declare an immediate moratorium on further land development
  • create and enact a long term building and transportation plan for Sussex county that will mitigate the congestion on our roads, ensure public safety, and protect our environment

We call on you to intercede in these matters as the Sussex County Council has failed its constituents. It's time to address these matters in a serious manner and call for the resignation of those who give carte blanche to developers.
