The issue

I'm 12 and just started year 7 this year. Having a twin means double the expenses, and I quickly realized how costly our school uniforms can be. My uniform alone cost $500, and shoes were an additional $200. With technology needs adding up to $2000, these costs are a massive burden on my family. We are not the richest, and it's tough seeing my dad struggle with debt just so we can fit in at school.

The situation is not unique to us. Many families across Australia face the continuous challenge of affording school uniforms, which are essential for every child. The costs of education should not be so prohibitive that they create financial stress on families and hinder students from feeling comfortable and included among their peers.

Official surveys show that the average Australian family spends over $500 on school uniforms annually per child. This expenditure is unsustainable for many, especially those already facing financial hardship. Education is a basic right, and a simple uniform should not stand in the way.

We are calling on school boards and politicians to take action and implement measures that will reduce the costs of uniforms. Schools can partner with suppliers to provide more affordable options, or government subsidies can be introduced to help low-income families afford these essential items.

Affordable uniforms mean that children can focus on learning, engaging in school life, and nurturing their potential without the undue stress of financial strain on their families. They enable an inclusive environment where every student feels they belong, regardless of their economic background.

Please join me in urging our leaders to create tangible changes for Australian families. Sign this petition to demand lower school uniform prices across the nation.
