The Issue
The current IB TZ1 Math Analysis and Approaches Standard Level (AA SL) grade boundaries are unfairly high, placing undue stress and pressure on students striving for success. These boundaries, which categorize students' performance into grades, significantly impact their overall IB diploma scores and their future academic and career opportunities.
Currently, IB students are confronted with an exceedingly challenging curriculum in Math AA SL. The rigorous content demands extensive understanding and application, often requiring skills beyond the expected level for a standard curriculum. Yet, the grade boundaries have not been adjusted to reflect this increased difficulty. This disparity results in lower grades that do not accurately represent the students' knowledge, effort, and capabilities.
Moreover, the psychological toll on students is substantial. The pressure to achieve good grades in such a demanding course leads to heightened anxiety, stress, and even mental health issues. Lowering the grade boundaries will alleviate some of this stress, promoting a healthier learning environment and allowing students to perform to the best of their abilities without the fear of an unfair grading disadvantage.
Lower grade boundaries are not without precedent. In recent years, many academic programs worldwide have initiated similar adjustments in recognition of the evolving and more demanding academic standards. Aligning the IB Math AA SL grade boundaries with the actual difficulty of the course content reflects a fairer evaluation and a more accurate depiction of the students’ competencies.
We urge the International Baccalaureate organization to reconsider and lower the grade boundaries for IB TZ1 Math AA SL. By doing so, they will not only acknowledge the dedication and hard work of current students but will also pave the way for future students to achieve success under a fair grading system.
