Thanks again for supporting my LoveFilm/Amazon Instant Video petition.
Now Amazon is working towards offering 100% subtitling on their service!
Unfortunately, there are still many other services lagging behind and leaving out customers with hearing loss. Sky’s On Demand service is 96% inaccessible, and 80% of all on-demand providers in the UK don’t offer any subtitles! [LINK to https://www.change.org/p/sky-enable-subtitles-for-ondemand]
A big part of the problem is that, unlike with traditional TV, there’s no legislation telling broadcasters to provide subtitles for ‘on demand’ and ‘catch up’ services.
But there’s an important opportunity to change this, and force them to offer subtitles!
The Government has promised to review legislation about subtitling for ‘on demand’ services in July 2016, if it's clear that no progress is being made.
Action on Hearing Loss has launched a campaign calling on Government and broadcasters to “Subtitle it! Whatever we watch, however we watch it”. Please take action and email Ed Vaizey, Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy – who is in charge of broadcasting – to tell him to stick to his promise to review legislation next year.
