Stop Louisiana OMV Installment Agreements with Excessive Fines!

Stop Louisiana OMV Installment Agreements with Excessive Fines!
The Issue
My name is Stephanie a mother of 5 from Slidell La. I found out in 2016 when I went to renew a registration that I owed a total $1200 in fees from insurance lapses over a period of years. In order for me to renew my registration I would need to pay all the fees plus what it would cost me for my registration. Of course I did not have all that money up front, so they told me that I would not be able to renew registrations or licenses if the fines were not paid. I was then informed that they had just started this new program called an installment program and would need to sign up. So of course I did, made my first payment and I got my registration. The next payment was set up to auto draft and it never did. So they suspended my license, cancelled my account and I had to go back into the omv to find out why. I was told that I had insufficient funds (wrong). I then asked if I could pay off my amount owed in full. I was told no not while it was cancelled, that I had to re-enter into another installment then I could pay it off. Not explaining to me that the price would double, I entered into another installment. Same scenario again, the first payment came out, but the auto drafted next payment did not. So I continued to have to go into the omv to redo my installment agreement over and over as it continued to get larger. I have now redone my agreement at least 6 times. I now owe the omv $7000 without getting any new fines or fees. Recently in April of this year i went into the omv once again to find out why this was happening again and the lady finally looked into my account and said all my information was entered incorrectly, including my email address which is why I was never able to log in to the portal. So she changed it. No offer to reduce my fees. So my payments have been coming out fine every month since April, until now. As of September 2019 my account has been cancelled once again. They kicked me out of the portal so I am not allowed to even make a payment myself. They have threatened to go after my taxes and my credit and Now they want me to pay $6500 up front within 60 days or they will suspend my license indefinitely as well as my registration privileges. Also they will add another 25% fee on top of the whole amount. The only answer I keep getting is that I need to go into the omv and sit all day to make a payment. There famous excuse is “you had insufficient funds”. If you know anyone who is going through this or if you yourself is going through this please help me make a change. This needs to stop! The Slidell OMV is the only one that handles the installment agreements. Also there is never any answers to be given. The Slidell omv will tell you to call the 1-800 number of your payments are not being processed and they will tell you to talk to the omv. It’s back and forth. Someone needs to answer for this. There are a lot of innocent people being affected by this money making scheme.
