The Issue

Founded in 1913, Jefferson Davis Parish was named so to glorify the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis. He was a slaveowner and an all around scummy man. He was the highest figure of authority in the country founded on racism and slavery and the fact that there is a Parish in Louisiana named after him goes against Louisiana’s rich culture of diversity and inclusion.

I am creating this petition in hopes that the Louisiana State Legislature as well as Governor John Bel Edwards will see that having a Parish named after this villain is unacceptable and that they will make haste in changing the name to something else, perhaps renaming it to another of Louisiana’s many historical figures who better reflect the core values of Louisiana. By changing the name of Jefferson Davis Parish, the great state of Louisiana will be one step closer to solving the many issues of racial inequality that have plagued our state since its founding.
