Louisiana has notoriously bad traffic problems, and it is well known that the worst traffic in the whole state is in the Baton Rouge Metro area. Some of the worst traffic in the entire region exists near the Ascension Parish line, where an explosion of population has occurred over the past 10 years. This growth has continued to explode, and traffic has continued to worsen. The main area of congestion is at the Prairieville - Geismar exit on I-10, where Hwy 73 and Hwy 621 converge at the overcrowded interstate. There is a bottleneck at this interchange as it is a main thoroughfare for residential, commercial, and industrial commuters. To make matters worse, there are four schools within 3 miles of this exit with another 2 more planned to be built in the next couple of years. This doesn't include the dozens of new residential developments that have been approved for construction adding even more commuters to the overstuffed roadways. The majority of commuters in this area are traveling between Baton Rouge and Ascension. The plans that local lawmakers have been pushing are for additional exits further south towards Gonzales. These plans will do nothing for our daily parking lot that is Airline Hwy or I-10 towards Baton Rouge. This is a public safety nightmare, and local residents need relief. We need a new overpass and interstate exit located between Hwy 73 and Highland Rd. A crossover road that will connect the Bluff Rd. to Hwy 73 so that commuters are not forced through one of the existing choke points that will only get worse. This will help local commuters as well as emergency responders trying to get to an accident on I-10 or an emergency at one of the many chemical plants in the Geismar area. The sensical location for this crossover road is in an area of mostly pasture land located between St. John Catholic Church near White Rd. This location is only 1 mile wide of mostly uninhabited property. This would allow motorist to bypass the Dutchtown traffic on either the Bluff Rd. or Hwy 73 instead of heading into the mess. This may not be the final location or project idea, but this petition is to help push a fresh new idea for interstate access north of the Hwy 73, instead of the regurgitated ideas that have gone nowhere to date. We need the State of Louisiana to help secure funds for this project as soon as possible.
