Nearly 1 in 5 American Adults Who Have Had COVID-19 are now suffering from Long COVID. Long COVID is defined by the CDC as health problems lasting four or more weeks after first getting COVID-19. Those suffering from Long COVID can experience a range of debilitating symptoms. Each new variant is contributing to the development of Long COVID. Many people suffering are unable to work, have lost their jobs, their homes, and their health.

There are currently no approved treatments for Long Covid, no medical specialist seeing patients, no biomarker to determine who has it, and a lack of research and clinical trials trying to cure the many who are disabled.  We need the US government to declare a "STATE OF EMERGENCY" and treat Long Covid with the same warp speed that they did with Vaccines. 

Of the nearly 65 million adults in the U.S. who currently have long COVID, more than 80% are having some trouble carrying out daily activities, according to CDC.

Long Covid has prevented many workers from going back to their jobs and has caused many of them to receive medical treatments for long periods of time. Harvard University economist David Cutler found long COVID could cost the U.S. economy $3.7 trillion, according to a report released earlier this year. 

 What is at stake?

 

 

 Around 16 million working-age Americans (those aged 18 to 65) have Long COVID today. Of those, 2 to 4 million are out of work due to long Covid. The annual cost of those lost wages alone is around $170 billion a year (and potentially as high as $230 billion).

Long Covid stands to worsen for millions more over time if the U.S. does not take the necessary policy actions! 

There are at least five critical government interventions that can reduce the economic burden of Long COVID: better prevention and treatment options, expanded paid sick leave, improved workplace accommodations, wider access to disability insurance, and enhanced data collection on Long COVID economic effects. We need More clinical trials, repurposed medications already approved, and more research to identify the underlying issues that Covid is doing to those suffering.

Long COVID may be a “lifelong disability” if no action is taken, says new research. It also suggests at least 1 in 10 individuals infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 will go on to have long COVID symptoms, with the highest percentage of cases in people between 36 and 50 years. More money and more trials are needed to understand Long COVID and identify treatments. Given the annual cost of lost wages alone, such research funding is likely to have a high return on investment.
