Limit the Frequency and Age of Breeding for Retired Racehorse Mares

Limit the Frequency and Age of Breeding for Retired Racehorse Mares
The issue
Despite their iconic status in their racing careers, far too many horses face a grim fate upon retirement. Take the heartbreaking story of Black Caviar, a national icon, who was forced to bear 9 foals in just over a decade before she was euthanized due to complications. Similarly, my own mare, once a racer, had to become a broodmare at a young age of three. When birthing complications arose, she was ignominiously taken to auction to be sold for dog meat.
Mares like Black Caviar and my own horse reflect a disturbing yet pervasive trend across the racing industry: treating retired mares merely as foal factories. This exploitation has severe repercussions on their health and lifespan.
Regulation should be imposed to protect horses after their racing careers. It is time to urge lawmakers to pass legislation making it illegal to breed mares more often than biennially and only up until they are 20 years old. The longevity and welfare of the racehorse population should be prioritized over the rampant, unsustainable breeding practices.
The abandonment and exploitation of these animals after their utility on the racetrack is not just a tragedy but also a betrayal. Protect our racehorses from neglect and premature death by supporting this vital legislation. Sign the petition and help preserve the dignity and quality of life for all racehorses.
