The Issue

Imagine not being able to contact a loved one in the middle of an emergency. This is not just a hypothetical scenario; it is the current reality faced by countless families across Arkansas due to the ban on phones in schools. As worried parents, guardians, and students ourselves, the inability to reach our children in critical moments fills us with constant anxiety and concern.

The phone ban, intended to minimize distractions and enhance focus within educational settings, has inadvertently created a communication barrier that could be potentially dangerous. Emergencies are, by nature, unexpected, and every second counts when they occur. Our children are left without a crucial tool not only for emergency communication but also for their safety and peace of mind.

Statistics indicate that over 90% of students in the United States own a smartphone*. This commonplace tool is not just a phone; it is a lifeline. In instances where school violence or emergencies might occur, the ability for students to quickly alert authorities, or contact their families, can be essential.

We believe there can be a middle ground that satisfies both educational and emergency needs. Schools can implement policies where phones are kept on silent and allowed to be used during emergencies. Alternatively, schools might designate specific times and areas where phone use is permitted.

This petition is not about encouraging disruptive use of mobile phones but rather about ensuring that students have the means to protect themselves and make responsible use of available technology when necessary. We are calling on the Arkansas Department of Education to lift the phone ban and develop a balanced approach to smartphone use in schools. By doing so, we ensure that the safety of our children is not compromised.

Sign this petition to demand the necessary change to protect our children’s safety and improve communication in emergencies.
