Dear friends of Sea-Eye,
Another cruel tragedy has occurred on the Mediterranean Sea!
32 people left from Turkey on an unseaworthy boat – presumably in the hope of finally living in safety in the EU. When the Italian coast guard found the boat a few days ago, all help came too late for six people. It is believed that the two toddlers aged one and two, a twelve-year-old boy and three adults died of starvation and thirst.
This horrific event shows how crucial our rescue missions still are. Our most urgent concern remains to send our ship to the area of operation as often as possible.
However, the economic and political situation this year has caused our donations to drop by more than 30%. In connection with increased prices, especially fuel prices, we are faced with the serious question of whether and when the next rescue missions can be carried out.
Erik Marquardt, member of the European Parliament for Alliance 90/The Greens, finds clear words: “The authorities are harassing aid organizations and increasing the pressure also financially. This happens because they want to use letting people drown as a deterrent. We must not allow this strategy to work. A wall of dead people is being built and hardly anyone is interested. This is so cruel, this must not be allowed to go down, even in difficult times”.
Please help us to be able to be at sea during these difficult times. Make use of the opportunity to have your donation doubled on our project page at Betterplace! Every amount counts – and saves lives.
Thank you very much and warm regards
Yours, Joana Weinmann
