Dear friends of Sea-Eye,
rarely has it been as visible as these days that EU member states grant different rights to people seeking protection. We are currently seeing how Ukrainians who are forced to flee are being offered uncomplicated protection and it is no problem for them to cross the border to the European Union. And that is good! This is exactly how it should be. For all people seeking protection!
Unfortunately, reality is quite different. For years, the EU has relied on deterrence and isolation on the Mediterranean. And that's not all to it, the EU uses the so-called Libyan Coast Guard - criminal and armed militias - to keep people from fleeing the civil war country. Can you imagine the EU doing the same at the Ukrainian border? Governments would have to explain themselves, demands for resignations would be heard, there would be talk of total political failure.
What we’ve been calling for years to finally end the countless deaths at the EU's external borders remains the same: Establish safe passages for all people in need of protection!
We have now reiterated this demand to the German government together with our partner German Doctors on the occasion of the launch of the 6th rescue mission of SEA-EYE 4.
While we are still waiting for all protection seekers to be granted their rights, we can already act ourselves. The SEA-EYE 4 is on its way to the operational area right now and will be on the lookout for people in distress at sea. And you can act by supporting us and by donating to the current rescue mission.
Thank you very much!
Yours, Gorden Isler
