The Issue

Dear Historic District Commission,
Thank you for scheduling this special meeting to address the 1300 Lafayette East Cooperative Detroit Thermal Project.
The residents of 1300 recognize and respect your responsibility to preserve Detroit’s historically and culturally significant neighborhoods —including Lafayette Park and the legacy of Mies van der Rohe. We are proud to be part of this community, and 1300 itself is an architectural landmark with historical value.

Over the years, we’ve appreciated our positive rapport with our neighbors and remain committed to maintaining those relationships.  At the same time, this project is critical to ensuring continued heat for our building.

We are grateful that Detroit Thermal revised its plan in response to our neighbors’ concerns. The nearby playground will remain untouched, the steam vents will be manholes in the parking area, and any limited disturbance  to trees or bushes will be addressed through restoration
or replacement. The historical significance and aesthetic integrity
of Mies van der Rohe’s vision will be preserved—we would have it no other way.

Thank you for your time and careful consideration.
Sincerely,

209
